Met Office meteorologist Marco Petagna said: 'Wednesday will see the last of the mild days, with temperatures in double figures, between 10 and 12 degrees (50F-54F).

Gusts of up to 110km/h are expected along all coastal areas today ahead of Storm Caroline's passage over the North West and North towards Scotland on Thursday. Severe winds will affect parts of Scotland, but it will generate strong and blustery winds over Ireland also.

So far, the highest wind measured so far was in Scotland's Shetland Isles, at 93 miles per hour.

The U.K.'s national weather service, The Met Office, issued Amber National Severe Weather Warnings from Scotland to northern Ireland.

Scotland's Transport Minister Humza Yousaf said: "With stormy weather expected across the north of Scotland we would urge people to check with their operators before they travel, especially if they are planning a ferry journey. Some damage to buildings is possible, such as tiles blowing off roofs", the Met Office said.

There may also be short-term power outages.

As Caroline clears, the winds will swing round to the north, bringing colder air and the return to more wintry conditions.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for Northern Ireland, with Storm Caroline expected to brings snow, ice and winds of up to 70mph.

There is also a warning of icy road surfaces, delays in rail or air travel and the interruption of power supplies in some rural areas.

The heaviest and most frequent of the snow showers will progressively become confined to northeast Scotland during Saturday. Strong northwest winds may cause drifting of the snow in places with blizzard conditions possible at times across northern Scotland.

From Friday to Sunday we're being told to expect strong northwesterly winds and snow showers.

Storm Caroline has become the third named-storm of the season, following Brian back in October.
