The head of the Parliament's delegation, socialist lawmaker Ana Gomes, said the murder "was aimed at instilling fear in everyone, especially those involved in investigating and prosecuting cases of money laundering and corruption".

The Mediterranean country observed a national day of mourning in her honor and has offered a 1-million-euro (1.19 million US dollar) reward for information about her murder.

Television reported that Caruana Galizia had filed a complaint to the police two weeks ago to say she had received threats.

Regarding the way the Caruana Galizia family were informed, the Prime Minister said that he was informed that it was the inquiring magistrate, who had been pre-advised regarding the arrests, who was thought to be the one who would have given the arrests news to the family. "When the handling of an investigation is not sound, it is hard to have faith in its outcome".

"The investigation appeared to be continuing throughout Monday, as police and armed forces had cordoned off an area in Marsa, a small port town close to Valletta, the capital".

Police made arrests in several locations around Malta on Monday morning as part of a joint operation with the armed forces and secret service.

A court hearing is set for Tuesday. The suspects then can either plead innocent or guilty.

IPhone Crashing? Update to iOS 11.2 Now
Apple on its website urged users to turn off notifications for all apps on Apple devices before updating the device to iOS 11.2. The iOS bug is the second big software blunder from Apple this week. "This was really bad", wrote Reddit user KarlKrum.

Europol, the European Union's police agency, has sent a team of organized crime experts to help Maltese police investigate the assassination, joining the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Dutch forensic experts.

All the suspects were Maltese nationals, Muscat's statement added.

Caruana Galizia, 53, ran a hugely popular blog in which she relentlessly highlighted cases of alleged corruption, often involving politicians from the Mediterranean island of Malta.

The island nation has a reputation as a tax haven in the European Union and has attracted companies and money from outside Europe.

Her murder raised concern within the European Union about the rule of law in Malta, and many saw it as an attack on independent media.

Caruana Galizia also covered criminal gangs and drug trafficking and was responsible for exposing Malta's links with the so-called Panama Papers document leak.

Many top officials had sued her over her reporting.
