What's more, the 63-year-old Edwards is jumping back into the fray under a "New Leadership Model" at Arizona State, where he's the "CEO" of the football program and "will be similar to an NFL approach using a general manager structure".

"Some people will say that this is a very unusual move for anyone to make", Anderson said.

Anderson is thrilled to have Edwards aboard.

"I have no doubt that he will put a lot of points on the scoreboard of life for everyone in this community", de Picciotto said. ASU fans will hope his reassimilation to the sideline goes more smoothly. Edwards takes over for Todd Graham, who coached the school to a 46-31 record in six seasons in Tempe, Ariz. "We're good! I ain't taking it personal".

The former ESPN analyst, who hasn't coached since 2008, conducted an introductory press conference on Monday. Edwards' contract at ASU is for five years, but financial terms were not provided.

"When you sign on to do something, you finish", he said. "They're not bringing me here to play, although I'll tell ya, I've got one hit left".

This will mark Edwards' second go-around at the collegiate level, but his first as a head coach.

Edwards did have four winning seasons in the National Football League, but he finished with a 54-74 overall record in eight seasons. "Why is this not the destination?"

Edwards' hiring was complete pending approval by the Arizona Board of Regents, ASU said in a press release. It's a collaborative approach to managing the ASU football program that includes sport and administrative divisions, which will operate as distinct, but collective units focused on elevating all aspects of Sun Devil Football.
