The office of Special Counsel Robert Mueller removed a top investigator amid allegations that he had sent text messages appearing critical of President Donald Trump, the office confirmed to The New York Times on Saturday.

Peter Strzok, as deputy head of counter-intelligence at the FBI, was a key player in the investigation into Clinton's use of a private email server to do government work as Secretary of State, as well as the probe into possible coordination between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation in the 2016 election.

Strzok was reportedly reassigned to a job in the FBI's human resources department following the discovery of the alleged texts.

Clinton and her supporters say Comey's moves in October cost her the 2016 election, and Trump and his Republican allies have used it to justify Comey's firing - the event that ultimately led to Mueller being appointed as special counsel. A review of the texts is now underway to determine whether the two agents allowed political bias to influence their work, but regardless of what that investigation concludes, the story is sure to provide ammunition for those, like President Trump and his defenders, who have accused the Mueller investigation, FBI, and overall intelligence community of being driven by partisanship.

Frost also said "we still have some talking to do" as it relates to him returning to UCF to coach the Knights' bowl game. The Knights were 0-12 the year before, but finished 6-6 his first season and went to a bowl game.

Until now, Nunes said, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Department of Justice have failed to sufficiently comply with an August 24 committee subpoena, including by refusing repeated demands "for an explanation of Peter Strzok's dismissal from the Mueller probe". The FBI and the Office of the Special Counsel declined to comment. Rumors over the cause of Strzok's removal have swirled for months.

Agent Peter Strzok is considered one of the most experienced investigators in the FBI and previously assisted with the Hillary Clinton email investigation, before moving on to investigate Russia's interference in the election. When Mr. Trump fired his F.B.I. director, James B. Comey, in May, he initially cited his handling of the Clinton email investigation as the reason for his dismissal.

The Justice Department 's Office of the Inspector General said in a statement Saturday that it has been "reviewing allegations involving communications between certain individuals, and will report its findings regarding those allegations promptly upon completion of the review of them". Mueller was ramping up his investigation into Mr. Trump's former advisers, while also coming under criticism for putting many donors to Democratic candidates on his team.
