  • Top Democrats pull out of White House meeting after Trump tweet

The Democratic leaders, Senator Chuck Schumer of NY and Representative Nancy Pelosi of California, responded to the president's provocations by pulling out of a scheduled White House meeting meant to address the thorny issues that lawmakers are facing as the end of the year approaches.

He sat between two chairs left empty for Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer of NY and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California, the Democrats who skipped the meeting. "But the developments of the last 24 hours are discouraging", White House spokesman Raj Shah told reporters traveling with Trump.

In an earlier statement, the two Democratic leaders said that instead of meeting the president, they meant to negotiate directly with their Republican counterparts in an attempt to avert a government shutdown next month. They begged Mr. McConnell and House Speaker Paul D. Ryan, Wisconsin Republican, to join them in direct negotiations without the president involved.

The Democrats' statement said: "We don't have any time to waste in addressing the issues that confront us, so we're going to continue to negotiate with Republican leaders who may be interested in reaching a bipartisan agreement".

"I don't see a deal!" he concluded.

Trump's focus on his Republican base has been magnified in his fresh dispute with Schumer and Pelosi.

"It's time to stop tweeting and start leading", Mr. Schumer said, insisting that congressional negotiators were close to a deal until Mr. Trump's Twitter post derailed things. Or will they vote against it and shut down the government?

But Trump went on to criticize them on immigration, crime and taxes, tweeting, "I don't see a deal!"

But the Prime Minister's Office saw fit to put out the short clip relating to Iranian presence in Syria on Saturday evening. The BBC reported last month that Iran was building a permanent military base near the town.

So what do Schumer and Pelosi have to lose by going to the mat against President Trump on this issue?

But the war of words in public did little to secure the Democratic support that Mr. Trump and Republican leaders will ultimately need.

And on Capitol Hill, some progress was made on Tuesday during talks on the Republican tax bill.

The White House press secretary, Sarah Sanders, said the meeting would proceed as scheduled with McConnell and Ryan.

"If that happens, we will absolutely blame the Democrats", Trump said of a shutdown.

Congress must approve a new spending measure to keep the government running after a short-term spending bill agreed between Trump and the Democrats in September expires on December 8. "I got elected partially because of a border wall".

But the president's extraneous tweets and quips have diverted attention from Trump's agenda at a time of maximum effect for his tax proposal and with a series of looming budget deadlines and other priorities in Congress. Wednesday's tweets came hours before Trump was departing for Missouri to rally support for his tax plan in the Senate.

As McConnell prepared to leave for the meeting at the White House, he said Pelosi and Schumer's protest demonstrated a "lack of seriousness".
