Irlinger wouldn't reveal how BMW expects the mix to break down, but it is counting on the new roadster and face-lifted coupe to lift overall i8 sales significantly. They are replaced by black panels overlaid with brushed-metallic trim etched with the word "Roadster". (60 kg) over the Coupe, at 3,514 lbs.

While the 2019 i8 Coupe keeps its 2+2 configuration, the new BMW i8 Roadster is a 2-seater, meant for the enjoyment of its driver and one lucky passenger. (91 L) of cargo space in cubby holes integrated into the rear bulkhead.

The Roadster wasn't the only i8-related development BMW unveiled in LA; since the i8 Coupe was introduced, electrification technology has evolved, and it benefits from the implements that have gone into the Roadster.

Spec for the i8 includes Nav Pro, Driving Assistant with Surround View and BMW Display Key, with Connected Drive Services all as standard.

The hybrid-specific all-wheel-drive set-up sees the petrol engine driving the rear wheels while the electric motor does its business upfront.

From an aesthetic point of view, it retains numerous familiar features of the i8 Coupe, which also takes advantage of the California motor show to undergo a bit of a refresh itself.

The combustion engine continues to develop the same 228 hp and 236 lb. -ft. The combined power output of 369bhp and 570Nm is channelled through a six-speed automatic gearbox to the rear wheels. With an updated battery system, the hybrids now make 374 horsepower, up from the old i8's 357 hp.

As before, the motor powers the front wheels.

The 2019 i8 coupe is estimated by BMW to accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 4.2 seconds, and the i8 Roadster is said to hit that speed in 4.4 seconds. That now rises to 74mph in eDrive electric mode. Top speed will be electronically-limited to 155 miles per hour.

Accompanying the driveline changes is a revised lithium-ion battery.

The BMW i8 Roadster features a fully electric fabric roof, which takes just 15 seconds to fold or open at speeds up to 30mph; when the roof is stowed, the car's rear window raises slightly to reduce air turbulence in the cabin, while the roof and its mechanism are created to allow for some storage space behind the front seats.

Also new is BMW's latest 360° electric charging system. The German automaker tweeted a video debuting the new model, roughly three months after confirming the Roadster's existence.
