Chennai: By-election to the RK Nagar (Dr. Radhakrishnan Nagar) Assembly constituency, left vacant following the death of AIADMK leader J Jayalalithaa, would be held on December 21, the Election Commission of India announced on Friday. After contesting alone in the cancelled April 12 bypoll, CPM has moved closer to the DMK with the unified AIADMK inclining towards the BJP and it would decide on its stand on the party's state committee to be held on November 30. Scrutiny will take place on December 5 and the last date for withdrawal of nominations is December 7.
In April, when the AIADMK was divided into two - one led by Panneerselvam and the other by jailed leader V K Sasikala and her nephew T T V Dinakaran -, the former faction fielded E Madhusudhanan and the later Dinakaran.
DMK would be retaining journalist turned politician Marudhu Ganesh as its candidate for the bye-election.
When asked whether he thought the byelection would be held in a free and fair manner, Mr. Stalin, noting that the DMK had approached the court in the recent past, said, "Now, we will face it [the byelection] in a democratic manner, and the DMK will win it with the support of its allies". The bypolls is expected to serve as the acid test for the AIADMK government as the constituency is likely to witness a four-cornered contest with nominees from AIADMK, DMK, BJP and TTV Dhinakaran jumping into the fray. The BJP had fielded well-known Tamil music composer Gangai Amaran in the countermanded election. Jayalalithaa had won the seat twice.
The constituency came into prominence after Jayalalithaa chose to contest the seat in June 2015 after the Karnataka high court acquitted her in the disproportionate assets case.
Dinakaran, whose faction lost the symbol battle, has chose to contest again in R.K. Nagar.
