  • Apple under fire over illegal student labour to build iPhone X

The students that the FT spoke to all volunteered to work overtime and they were paid for it illegally. We've confirmed the students worked voluntarily, were compensated, and provided benefits, but they should not have been allowed to work overtime. This is considered as illegal overtime for student interns in China.

AN INVESTIGATION into one of Apple's main iPhone manufacturing partners has revealed that up to 3,000 students are working up to 11 hours each day assembling iPhone X handsets in order to fulfil demand for the flagship phone. "Underage workers often enter the factories as student "interns" required to work at the factories by vocational schools". The interns also constitute "a very small percentage of the workforce", the representative said.

Foxconn and Apple later took measures to try to make the factory more comfortable and to reduce the amount of overtime from employees, though there have been several reports of worker suicides since. "A team of specialists are on site at the facility working with the management on systems to ensure the appropriate standards are adhered to". The ITC said a graduated tariff rate should be placed on imports of large residential washing machines above a 1.2 million-unit threshold in each of the next three years, with the rate starting at 50 percent the first year and sliding down to 40 percent by the third year.

According to the Financial Times, students from Zhengzhou Urban Rail Transit School - where they're training for railway-related occupations - were made to take part in the "training scheme", and Foxconn subsequently confirmed that the law had been broken in allowing the students to work overtime.

Mainly sunny today with cooler air moving in for Thanksgiving
Highs will scale back to the low to mid 50s on Thanksgiving Day , and showers may not be too far away from us toward the coast. Average high temperatures this time in November are in the lower to mid 40s so we will be slightly above.

Apple is dedicated to ensuring everyone in our supply chain is treated with the dignity and respect they deserve. She added: "The work has nothing to do with our studies".

The new iPhone X is displayed during an Apple special event in September.

. Despite that framing, the Times report doesn't establish a clear or direct connection between these events.

These efforts continue, and Apple's internal reports have claimed that conditions have improved generally since then.
