Those who advocate for net neutrality say undoing these rules makes it harder for the government to crack down on internet providers who act against consumer interests and that it will will harm innovation. "Repealing these regulations will create jobs, increase competition, and lead to better, faster, cheaper Internet access for all Americans", he said.

Ajit Pai, a Republican tapped by President Trump to take over as the agency's chairman in January, has been an outspoken opponent of the regulations put in place in 2015 that prohibit internet service providers from blocking websites, slowing connection speeds and charging extra for faster delivery of certain content.

"Secondly, the Federal Trade Commission has long had authority and had authority prior to 2015 for nearly 20 years over this space", he says.

Proponents of net neutrality protest against Federal Communication Commission Chairman Ajit Pai outside the American Enterprise Institute before his arrival in Washington, DC.

"Every single thing they're doing is for incumbent telephone cable and media companies", Gigi Sohn, a counselor to Obama administration FCC chair Tom Wheeler, told CNNMoney earlier this year.

While the notion of net neutrality has been in the public consciousness since 2014 at least, thanks in part to comedian/commentator John Oliver, Tuesday's announcement left many wondering just what the FCC does and how its new rules might affect their lives. Pai's FCC spiked the effort to go after AT&T, even before it began rolling out a plan to undo the net neutrality rules entirely. "Congress must stop Chairman Pai's plan in its tracks and ensure that net neutrality remains the law of the land".

In a blog post, Comcast commended Pai's decision to release his order to the public three weeks before the scheduled vote on December 14. And it gave us an Internet economy that became the envy of the world.

That kind of digital divide means rural people are unable to access the kind of healthcare, education, and economic and business opportunities that bigger cities enjoy.

As we've reported before, dozens of consumer advocacy groups including Fight for the Future, Demand Progress and the ACLU have supported the strong net neutrality rules - aligned with companies like Netflix, Google, Etsy, Vimeo, Reddit and Amazon.

Pai announced plans to review existing rules that prevent broadcast companies from owning TV stations that reach more than 39% of all TV households in the United States. Still, advocacy groups and various websites have been pushing to preserve net neutrality for months now. Now, in a report via the Guardian, they have formally revealed their plans. According to data analytics firm Gravwell, only about 3.9 million (17.4 percent) of the more than 22 million public comments submitted to the FCC were unique; most came from bots programmed to oppose net neutrality.

Pai says the Obama-era FCC had "finally met the enemy, and the enemy was giving something that consumers wanted for free".

A federal appeals court upheld the rules in 2016 after broadband providers sued.

Pai has said that the number of comments for or against net neutrality rules "is not as important as the substantive comments that are in the record".
