AAA: Highest Thanksgiving Travel for 2017 season

That is the highest number of travelers since 2005, and it's up 3.3 percent from last Thanksgiving.

"Thanksgiving kicks off the start of a busy holiday season, and more thankful Americans will travel to spend time with friends and family this year", said Sandra Marsian, AAA vice president of membership, travel and marketing, in a press release.

The Thanksgiving holiday travel period is defined as November 22 through November 26.

Gas prices are 30 cents higher than a year ago. Nationally, 89 percent of travelers - 45.5 million - will go by vehicle, which is 3.2 percent higher than a year ago.

Flying High: Over 82,000 Wisconsinites are forecast to take a flight. Most others will travel by air or train. The numbers have been increasing every year since.

The average price of gas in North Carolina is $2.40, a 32 cent increase from 2016's Thanksgiving average.

The higher gas prices are not enough to deter Floridians from traveling this Thanksgiving, AAA spokesman Mark Jenkins said.

AAA estimates that 51 million Americans plan to travel for the holiday, which means the roads will be super packed.

Cheaper Airfare: Consumers will pay the cheapest average airfare since 2013.

Road Trip Ready: Over 945,000 will take a Thanksgiving road trip; an increase of nearly 30,000 people (3.3%). The drivers ask for upfront payment rather than paying through the app.

Holiday high: auto rental daily rates will hit a five-year holiday high at $70/day, which may be due to an increase in domestic demand and cost of newer vehicles. "The Rockies region now has an abundant supply and is often one of the last to react to USA gas market activity, so we'll be watching to see how the latest national uptick affects Gem State prices in the coming days".

Previous year over the Thanksgiving holiday, AAA Carolinas rescued about 8,400 motorists, mainly because of dead batteries, flat tires and lockouts. Historically, Thanksgiving Day morning experiences the lightest traffic. "Nationwide, travel demand is surprisingly strong this fall, which is reducing fuel inventory and putting upward pressure on gas prices". "Fortunately, oil prices are beginning to soften, thanks to growth in crude production and inventories; and wholesale gas prices are slipping due to high gasoline production".

Motorists should see some relief at the pump before the holiday.

"Idaho has experienced a seasonal price drop, but it's been slower than in recent years", Conde said.

But some of the savings will be lost when renting a auto.

Travelers will pay more for AAA Three Diamond Rated hotels this holiday weekend.
