  • Train collision in Singapore leaves 25 injured

At this juncture, the two trains were about 10.7m apart, in accordance with safety protocol, said LTA deputy chief executive (infrastructure and development) Chua Chong Kheng at a press conference held at SMRT's headquarters yesterday evening. A faulty train was stalled at the Joo Koon station at 8:18 AM.

The software glitch arose when a faulty train was transiting between the old and new signalling systems, said LTA. "At 8.20am, the second train moved forward unexpectedly, and came into contact with the first train", the LTA and the SMRT said in a joint statement.

Of those injured, 25 were taken to the National University Hospital and Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH) for treatment while the other four were walk-in patients at NTFGH.

The reason behind the collision is yet to be known. The signalling system is supposed to make sure that trains maintain a safe distance between each other.

An east-bound train from Jurong had reportedly stopped at ClementiT station for two minutes longer than scheduled due to a technical fault.

But a few first-hand accounts of the incident claimed that the collision's impact caused many passengers to fall down. "We are doing all we can to restore services safely and expeditiously", the post said, adding that free bus and bridging bus services would be available between Boon Lay and Tuas Link. Most of the passengers are having moderate injuries.

"The Transport Ministry is expected to issue a statement as well", said Loh when at the hospital.

The collision involving two trains today, was the second such incident in Singapore MRT's 30-year history.

An independent inquiry panel had later found that the accident was caused by a 50l oil spill from a maintenance locomotive which had been doing maintenance hours along the MRT track before the collision.

"I hope they can solve this problem before the one month and bring (service) back onstream", he said.

"Operations from Joo Koon to Tuas Link will also be suspended tomorrow, Nov 16, 2017, while we conduct assurance checks with Thales".

SMRT's Senior Vice President of Rail Operations on the North-South and East-West Lines (NSEWL), Alvin Kek revealed that care teams were deployed to help injured commuters and that SMRT has a compensation process in place for such events. "All of a sudden, we were thrown off our feet", he said.
