  • US gives green signal to 'sensor' pill to track patient's medication

Abilify was first approved by FDA in 2002 to treat schizophrenia.

In combination though, the Abilify MyCite system was rejected by the FDA in April previous year due to concerns over the possible impact of "human factors" on safety.

Sure, those with a mental illness may very well need a little more monitoring to make sure they take their medications, but will those suffering from a condition with hallmark symptoms of paranoia and anxiety be helped by consuming a technology that quite literally puts a tracking device inside their body? Made by Japan-based Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., the medication system is meant to treat schizophrenia, bipolar I disorder and depression in adults.

The technology is the product of research between Japanese pharmaceutical company Otsuka and Proteus Digital Health, and is created to solve the problem of people missing medicine doses, which costs the US healthcare system an estimated $200 billion per year.

Proteus isn't the only firm working on such a digital drug system-they have a lot of company.

Before prescribing the new pill and tracking system, doctors should ensure that their patients are capable of and dedicated to using the system, says the FDA.

Additionally, the company also revealed that its Prime Music streaming service is also now available to Prime members in Canada . Finally, the Echo Plus features a built-in smart home hub and can directly link with other Zigbee products, such as Hue lights.

The new digital pill works by relaying a signal from a tiny sensor embedded in the pill itself (which is activated by the liquid in the human stomach) to a wearable patch on the patient.

This sensor is the "size of a grain of sand, and is made up of ingredients found in food", according to Otsuka.

The FDA has just approved the first digital pill, called the Abilify MyCite, that tracks whether a patient has eaten the pill or not.

Patients wear a patch over their torso, which relays a signal between the drug pill and the mobile app. The ingestible sensor used in Abilify MyCite was first permitted for marketing by the FDA in 2012.

"Dr. Shrank sees the potential in the new sensor technology to improve public health but also cautioned that improper usage "...could foster more mistrust instead of trust". "Our rollout of the Abilify MyCite system will be done in phases to obtain, and respond to, feedback from healthcare providers and their patients". It is also not approved for use in pediatric patients, and may increase suicidal thinking and behavior in children, adolescents, and young adults. But the device may be particularly beneficial for certain patients with mental illness since taking medications as prescribed is particularly crucial for these people.

But people with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder can also have impaired executive functions, including short-term memory, and may forget to take-or forget if they've taken-their medication for the day.
