Assault On Uber Passengers Spurns Class Action Lawsuit

The two women want the company to change the screening methods for drivers among other practices.

The "class-action" lawsuit filed by the women with the condition of anonymity, compiles all those victims who were subject to rape, sexual assault or gender-motivated violence or harassment by Uber drivers in the last four years. The lawsuit also suggests that Uber offer in-app panic buttons in the USA, something the company has already offered in India and South Africa. "These allegations are important to us and we take them very seriously", Uber said in a statement.

"Over the last seven years, Uber has done everything possible to continue using low-priced, woefully inadequate background checks on drivers and has failed to monitor drivers for any violent or inappropriate conduct after they are hired", the lawsuit states.

The women claim that they were sexually assaulted by their Uber drivers, and claim that the company engaged in "unlawful, fraudulent and unfair practices", such as duping them into believing that the drivers would safely bring them to their respective destinations.

"The company must come forward with information about how many reports it has received about rapes, sexual assaults, and gender-motivated harassment to allow consumers to assess whether Uber really does provide safe rides, especially to women", Christensen said, ABC News reports. "Nothing meaningful has been done to make rides safer for passengers - especially women".

Lebanon's president: Saudi Arabia is detaining PM
Hezbollah has said Saudi Arabia forced Hariri to resign in order to bring down his coalition government, which includes the group. Bahaa Hariri's name has been mentioned in Lebanese media reports as a possible Saudi-backed candidate to replace his brother.

Uber was not immediately available for comment.

The complaint alleges that this Uber driver had been previously charged with committing violent crimes and that Uber's background check "either failed to discover these egregious charges, or willfully chose to risk passengers' lives in exchange for the additional profit one more driver could potentially have provided".

"A litany of incidents regarding sexual assaults, and physical assaults, by Uber drivers on passengers, shows a pattern of similarly heinous, but avoidable attacks", the lawsuit states. Each alleges being sexually assaulted by Uber drivers who gave them rides home. But it stopped short of requiring ride-sharing companies to submit drivers to fingerprint background checks conducted by the government. Uber has attempted to publicly boost its reputation through a recent donation to sexual assault and domestic violence prevention programs.
