The 21 children and two adults gathered at Vault PK in Barrio Logan, an indoor gym that specializes in parkour - a military obstacle course training - when the celebration turned into horror just before 8 p.m., FOX5 San Diego reported.

Zacharty Smith, who went to the parkour centre with his son, described the scene to the LA TImes as a "freak accident".

The children suffered mostly minor injuries while at least were taken to hospitals with serious spinal injuries, San Diego fire officials said.

One person reportedly had to be dug out from under the rubble.

Arctic blast a record low for the Big Apple
A little warmup on Sunday with temperatures back in the upper 40s and a chance for rain showers by Sunday evening. Root said the normal high temperature for this time of year is 57 degrees.

Joe Saari said when he and his wife dropped off their two children for a few hours there were 100 to 150 kids at the facility, a warehouse that includes trampolines and bouncy houses. Distressed parents rushed to the facility to be reunited with their children.

His kids suffered minor scrapes, Saari said. The couple were heading back home to Chula Vista when one of their children called and said there had been an accident.

After the incident children were seen huddled in groups - some with their parents and guardians - outside the center, as emergency service vehicles lined the area.

At least 21 children and two adults were hurt when witnesses said about 50 children attending "Kids Night Out" at Vault PK ran at the same time to get pizza, causing a 20-by-30 foot wooden deck and stairwell to collapse, SDFD spokesman Steve Wright said. Many victims were being carried off in ambulances by medical personnel.
