World Cup preparations kicked off with a promising goalless draw against holders Germany at Wembley on Friday, with five-time champions Brazil providing the opposition on Tuesday. The Crystal Palace player, on loan from Chelsea, was a mixture of the elegant and the efficient for England, passing and moving so intelligently.

Higginbotham told Premier League Daily: "I know there have been a lot of players that have dropped out for injury and whatever reason".

The stand-out performer was Ruben Loftus-Cheek who despite failing to break into the Chelsea first-team, showed he has the quality to compete on the worldwide stage. "I have to keep learning and getting better and hopefully there's a chance to get on the plane".

"But I still think I am not in the best condition right now because I have had injuries at the start of the season which hindered my development and fitness".

Despite the new faces in contention for England starting spots, the average age for the expected starting side is 25-years-old, but Higginbotham believes that will only get lower as younger players - including those from the U21s - are handed more regular senior worldwide game time.

"I'm really not surprised with what they've done because they've shown that previously in younger ages and in the week in training, there's been an energy about the group".

Loftus-Cheek looked like a seasoned worldwide on the Wembley turf, pulling off a nutmeg and a Cruyff turn in the first half before being clattered as he played with a real swagger against Joachim Low's silverware-heavy team. "It's fantastic and I just want that feeling more and develop to be the best player I can be". But Loftus-Cheek was deservedly named man of the match.

But it was not just Loftus-Cheek who caught the eye.

Loftus-Cheek's impressive performance is particularly exciting for England supporters at a time when Southgate has made improving the technical quality of his midfield a priority, and the 20-year-old said a dream debut at Wembley has inspired him to kick on.

"What we've seen is Gareth will pick those players".
