Scientists say the study could help advance research of Huntington's disease, which causes humans to lose their ability to recognize faces, Sky News reported.

By training sheep using pictures of these celebrities, researchers from the University of Cambridge discovered that the animals are able to recognize familiar faces from 2-D images.

Scientists found that sheep have facial recognition abilities akin to those of humans or monkeys, according to Jenny Morton, the lead scientist in the study.

The former USA president was one of four celebrities used in a test of the woolly creatures' face-recognition skills, along with Harry Potter actress Emma Watson, British TV host Fiona Bruce and American actor Jake Gyllenhaal, the research team said.

As with some other animals such as dogs and monkeys, sheep are social animals and can recognise other sheep as well as familiar humans. In these initial tests, the sheep were shown the faces from the front, but to test how well they recognised the faces, the researchers next showed them the faces at an angle.

"My 2001 paper looked very carefully at this with a wider range of stimuli, more sheep and more conditions", he said.

Speculations are that the deceased women might have been sexually abused and killed as they tried to cross the Mediterranean . Since the collapse of Moammar Gaddafi's regime, the number of migrants crossing the Mediterranean from Libya has skyrocketed.

The sheep made the correct choice of celebrity or handler roughly 70 percent of the time on average.

Morton and a team trained eight sheep to recognise the famous faces from a frontal photo of each of them.

"Sheep are long-lived and have brains that are similar in size and complexity to those of some monkeys". However, the ability of sheep to identify faces was unclear.

In fact, they could even recognise people when pictures were altered or were taken from a different angle, an ability only previously recorded in humans and primates.

Likewise, when the authors of the new study swapped celebrity photographs with those of the sheep's handlers, the farm animals needed no training.

"We can't say for sure that the sheep understand that the pictures represent humans". "Finally, after 10 years of development, we now have a really useful battery of tests we can use to measure cognitive function in sheep".
