Facebook wants to fight revenge porn by seeing your nudes

  • Facebook suggests users upload nudes to avoid revenge porn

Facebook is asking some of its users to send them their nude pictures.

Julie Inman Grant, Australia's e-Safety commissioner, said Facebook would not permanently store the images, only their digital fingerprints, which are capable of blocking further attempts to upload the pictures but can not be decoded to produce the images themselves. Then the user can flag it as a "Non Consensual intimate image" for Facebook.

Hopefully, advances in technology like the ones touted by Facebook and increased governmental awareness of the problem on a global scale will see instances of revenge porn reduce, thereby sparing hundreds of people the mental harm it can cause.

But can you trust Facebook?

A hash of the nude image is created and passed along to Facebook's AI image-matching systems. If they decide the images have been shared violate Facebook's community standards, in many cases, the account which shared the image will be disabled, the company said.

The social network then apparently applies hashing technology to create a unique digital fingerprint of the image, so that if another user tries to upload it the image will be blocked.

In the Australian pilot, users must first complete an online form on the e-safety commissioner's website outlining their concerns. "Some information is more valuable for hackers, and hashed photos could be one of them".

In addition, the DHS said the Nicaraguan government did not request that TPS be extended for its citizens in the United States. They called for TPS to be extended at 18-month intervals, as the current law requires, until Congress hammers out a legal fix.

"I welcome Facebook taking steps to tackle this issue, as it has often been very slow to act in the past", she told BBC News.

The technology prevents photos that have been previously reported or tagged as porn from being re-shared.

Australia's e-Safety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant said Facebook is not storing the images, but only a digital footprint of them.

Here in Ireland, Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald publicised the Government's intentions to criminalise revenge porn in May of this year.

Grant and Facebook, however, are very confident of Facebook's anti revenge porn tool.

After that, it would be up to the company's AI tech to prevent anyone from uploading porn depicting the same person.

While this feature may set all your danger instincts on high alert, the company says that it isn't actually storing your images (which are secured by end-to-end encryption) but rather their hash values or links.
