Keitany had won three straight NY marathons, but Flanagan pulled away from the Kenyan great with about three miles to go.

Two time World Half Marathon champion Geoffrey Kamworor of Kenya finally cruised to his maiden marathon victory when he triumphed at New York City men's race on Sunday.

Flanagan's final time of 2:26:53 was nearly a full minute ahead of Keitany's, who finished with 2:27:54. The 24-year-old victor kissed the pavement right after crossing the finish, then turned to embrace Kipsang.

Flanagan finished second in NY for her first marathon in 2010 but hadn't run this race since. She's done other marathons since 2010 - including a sixth-place finish at the Rio Games in 2016 - but this is her first time running NY since that memorable first run.

Unlike last year's men's wheelchair race which came down to a photo finish and six hundredths of a second, Marcel Hug of Switzerland defended his title by a whopping 2 minutes, 19.82 seconds over John Charles Smith of Great Britain.

"New York is very fantastic".

At 21 miles, Keitany, Flanagan and Daska pulled away and at mile 23, Flanagan grabbed the lead for good.

Flanagan became the first American woman since Miki Gorman in 1977 to win the race, finishing in an unofficial time of 2:26:53.

At the 2011 Berlin Marathon, Kamworor pushed Patrick Makau to break the world marathon record with new times of 2:03:38 as Ethiopian Yemane Tsegay won in 2012 Rotterdam.

Kamworor edged Kipsang with a time of 2:10:53.
