She was 26 at the time.

New York City Police Department Deputy Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce told a news conference that the alleged victim "put forth a credible and detailed narrative".

NY police have a credible rape allegation against fallen Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein and are gathering evidence for a possible arrest warrant, a senior officer confirmed Friday.

"We immediately contacted the district attorney in NY and we started working the case together".

He added: "To arrest Mr Weinstein we would need an arrest warrant, so that requires a court order, so we want to get our evidence first before we go out and do something like that".

Following the alleged assaults, de la Huerta says she entered a very dark period, drinking to excess and slipping into depression.

As the scandal widens, police in Britain are now investigating an allegation of sexual assault by actor Kevin Spacey.

Weinstein's representative, Sallie Hofmeister, says the 65-year-old Oscar victor denies any allegations of non-consensual sex.

The investigation comes a month after The New York Times published an expose of sexual harassment allegations against Weinstein, leading to his firing from the company he co-founded and his expulsion from the organization that bestows the Academy Awards.

NY abandoned it's five-year statute of limitations for rape in 2006, meaning Weinstein could be prosecuted. "We are actively investigating them", Sergeant Brendan Ryan, an NYPD spokesman said Thursday. The NYPD continues to work with the Manhattan District Attorney's office on the case. However, these items were given with a caveat attached.

Reuters requests for comment from Weinstein's representative and his lawyer were not immediately answered.
