Khichdi will be promoted as "Brand India food" at the event.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed on India's crucial role in food processing as he inaugurated the "World Food India Festival 2017" in New Delhi on Friday. It welcomes to host a congregation of global investors and business leaders of major food companies from November 3 to 5 in New Delhi.

This is the first time that India is hosting an event for the food processing sector.

In a section titled "Projects Ready for Procurement in FY 2016-17" in its "Make in India Investment Book", which had been circulated in Indian Missions overseas, the Centre had mentioned that work on the project started in 2015 with the anticipated project completion time line of 2018-19.

Hindustan Unilever Ltd CEO and Managing Director Sanjiv Mehta said: "India is an attractive destination by any yardstik which you look at.We are talking about one of the most attractive markets and as the economy grows, there would be more people coming and moving up". However, more investment is required in contract farming, raw material sourcing and creating agri-linkages.

There were opportunities in post-harvest management such as primary processing and storage, preservation infrastructure, cold chain and refrigerated transportation, the Prime Minister asserted.

"Over a million passengers consume food on trains in India in a single day, they are potential customers for food processing industry", PM Modi said.

Focussing upon Sikkim's 100 percent organic agriculture state status, he had talked about the need for lifestyle and food habit choice changes, which requires a better than before food processing industry.

The making of "Khidchi" will take place in the presence of Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and Minister of Food Processing Industries Harsimrat Kaur Badal at India Gate at 12.30 pm.

Unilever Global President Amanda Sourry said, "The world is looking towards India".

He also spoke of the government targeting doubling of farmers' income in five years. Khichdi also has qualities of wellness and health food and is very nutritious.

He said the government was planning to link agro-processing clusters with production centres through Mega Food Parks, which "will offer huge value proposition in crops such as potato, pineapple, oranges and apples".

Over 800 kgs of khichdi will be prepared live on 4 November at the festival in a bid to create a world record and popularise the dish globally.
