Investigators told Japanese public broadcaster NHK the woman was reported missing last Tuesday after she posted a message online saying she was looking for someone to join her in committing suicide.

Police found the bodies of eight women and one man in cold-storage containers on Monday and Tuesday, as they were conducting a search on suspicion of the man's involvement in the disappearance of a young woman.

Security camera footage showed the victim and the suspect walking together at Hachioji Station and Sobudai-mae Station.

"The suspect, named as 27-year-old Takahiro Shiraishi, told police he lured the victims to his room in Zama City, south-west of Tokyo, before killing and cutting up the bodies".

The suspect, Takahiro Shiraishi, is reported to have confessed to killing and dismembering nine individuals.

After his arrest, Shiraishi is said to have admitted dismembering the victims in his bathroom, and putting some of the body parts in rubbish bins. When they asked Shiraishi if he knew where the missing woman was, according to the Asahi report, he replied, "In that cooler".

"In August, there was a smell, similar to that from sewage, coming from his residence", says a male company employee who lives in the same apartment building as Shiraishi. "During the course of the investigation, the heads of nine bodies have been discovered", the police told a local TV channel. "It was something I never smelled before".

Other media said Shiraishi and the woman had connected via a website featuring information about suicides.

Although Japan has one of the lowest crime rates in the world, it has seen some high-profile killings recently.

In Japan, a low-crime country, it is the grimmest such case since a former employee of a centre for the disabled went on a knife rampage there, killing 19 people past year. In 2015, a man killed five people, including relatives and neighbors, in another knifing spree, according to the AP.
