GameStop PowerPass is a video game subscription service that capitalizes on the company's chain of retail stores and its dominance in the used games market.

USA retailer GameStop has come up with an innovative solution that will help its brick and mortar stores stay relevant in the digital age.

Kotaku reports that its new PowerPass program offers a six-month membership program for $60.

GameStop will soon be starting a new service under an exciting rental scheme.

The advertisement was first seen at ResetEra, the new gaming forum. The "Power Pass" will cost the same as a new game ($60), and will last for six months. So, if you really like Call of Duty: WW2, you can keep it and not feel like you wasted any money. Because of that, you can use the subscription to get this fall's must-have games.

SoftBank reportedly walking away from Sprint/T-Mobile merger talks
But they trail far behind Verizon and AT&T, the two largest US carriers with 147 million and 139 million subscribers. Nikkei reported Monday that Sprint and T-Mobile planned to end merger talks.

The GameStop representative also confirmed an interesting detail that wasn't present in the leaked ad: you'll be able to gift a PowerPass subscription to other people. You'll also need to be a member of GameStop's PowerUp Rewards program, which fortunately has a free tier. Both services are subscription-based, and both allow you to get your hands on nearly any kind of game you want, regardless of release date. That's the store's loyalty program. We do, however, highly recommend such an account, as it includes a free subscription to Game Informer. There are no extra perks for PowerPass if you're already paying for PowerUp Rewards Pro, it seems.

Does this sound like the best way to play more games?

End your subscription term with a game that recently launched, and you've almost recouped the cost of the subscription.

This is an interesting move from GameStop, as it emulates rental services like GameFly.
