India's Sensex extends record gains; United Spirits surges 18%

A healthy inflow of foreign funds and a strengthening of the rupee's position against the United States dollar kept the market trajectory northwards throughout the session.

The 30-share BSE Sensex was down 47.50 points at 32995.00 and the 50-share NSE Nifty fell 16 points to 10,279.40.

The benchmark BSE Sensex ended 0.03 percent higher at 33,157.22, but still posted a record closing high.

Dhruv Desai, Director and Chief Operating Officer of Tradebulls, told IANS: "Almost all PSBs' stocks like those of SBI, BoB and PNB rose to touch their new 52-week highs during the intra-day trade".

"Nifty ended lower on Friday as selling pressure emerged in the afternoon session", said Deepak Jasani, Head - Retail Research, HDFC Securities.

Sector-wise, the S&P BSE healthcare index surged by 223.88 points, followed by the automobile index higher by 214.01 points and the consumer durables index augmented by 50.79 points.

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold shares worth a net Rs 375.63 crore yesterday, as per provisional data released by the stock exchanges.

The gainers were Adani Ports by 4.55 pc to Rs 432.85, Tata Motors DVR by 2.65 pc to Rs 236.65, ONGC by 2.62 pc to Rs 181.95 and Kotak Bank by 2.35 pc to Rs 1042.70.
