The National Prescription Drug Take Back program offers more than 5,000 collection sites around the nation to help people get rid of risky, expired, unused or unwanted prescription drugs.

Sheridan County Public Health will also collect appropriate prescriptions for the Wyoming Medication Donation Program.

According to the 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 6.4 million Americans abused controlled prescription drugs.

Bring your pills in for disposal to any of a variety of locations listed in the event flyer. The drop box is located in the lower level of the county administration building, near the entrance to the Sheriff's Office. Liquids, needles and other sharps will not be accepted.

Individuals can take pills and other solid forms of medication to one of nearly 5,000 collection sites manned by more than 4,000 partners nationwide.

"The abuse of these prescription drugs has fueled the nation's opioid epidemic, which has led to the largest rate of overdose deaths this country has ever seen".

Pills and medicines in solid forms will be taken with no questions asked, said Derryle Smith, resident agent in charge of the Drug Enforcement Agency in Gulfport.

The Knowledge Effect is partnering with this event to continue its mission to raise awareness and combat the rise of prescription drug abuse in the Hub City and Lafayette Parish. In addition to the misconception that prescription drugs are "safer" than illegal drugs, they are easily accessible in medicine cabinets and homes.

"There are a lot of consumers out there who don't know how to dispose of our medications".
