  • Progress has been made in efforts to prevent “voices being silenced on Twitter,” which has been a top priority for the company this year Dorsey said

Following the boycott, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has said that his company will introduce a stronger set of rules to weed out sexual harassment, hateful symbols and violent groups from the short messaging platform.

Two day after Twitter suspended actress Rose McGowan's account for violating its terms and policies, actors and activists alike took to boycotting the social media platform. The movie mogul was sacked last Sunday by the company he co-founded amid accusations that he sexually harassed or sexually assaulted women.

In a series of tweets, Dorsey acknowledged that Twitter is "still not doing enough" to restrict abusive or harassing content.

CEO Jack Dorsey has promised that his company will take a "more aggressive stance" in enforcing its rules, pledging to roll out significant changes in the coming weeks as a way to fix Twitter's harassment, propaganda, and abuse problems.

He said the decision was announced late on Friday "because we spent the whole day working on it and wanted to announce as soon as we were ready".

Rose McGowan's Twitter Account Suspended As She Renews Attacks on Hollywood
While McGowan has avoided addressing her past with Weinstein directly, she has often seemingly referenced it. The Tweet was removed and her account has been unlocked .

Twitter has long received staunch criticism over what users perceive as its repeated failure to curb toxic activities that appear on its site daily. We updated our policies and increased the size of our teams. It wasn't enough. In 2017 we made it our top priority and made a lot of progress.

Dorsey has failed to specify exactly what those new rules are, but he said Twitter will share more details next week. Verified users also tend to have high followerships, making it easier for some unscrupulous members of the Twitterati to point their followers towards others.

McGowab's account was shut down following her comments about the Harvey Weinstein controversy. "We stand with the courageous women and men who use Twitter to share their stories, and will work hard every day to improve our processes to protect those voices".

In a statement defending their actions in suspending Rose's account, Twitter bosses wrote that they would improve their processes for dealing with abuse.
