  • Paris wants all gas-powered cars out of the city by 2030

But a ban on petrol-fuelled vehicles marks a radical escalation of policy in the world's most visited city. The controversial move follows Mayor Anne Hidalgo's plan to ban all diesel cars from the city by 2024, when Paris will host the Summer Olympics.

Although it may seem incredibly hard for North Americans to imagine such a ban, many Parisians do not own a auto.

"Transport is one of the main greenhouse gas producers.so we are planning an exit from combustion engine vehicles, or fossil-energy vehicles, by 2030", Najdovski told France Info Radio, according to Reuters. City dwellers there rely heavily on public transportation and heavily utilize bike sharing networks and scooters.

Hidalgo has been seeking to reduce pollution with a series of measures.

Cities across the globe have announced similar plans in recent months to reduce or eliminate gas- and diesel-fueled cars. The city often has to implement temporary bans on vehicles or have "car free" days in the city to combat particle air pollution.

Hamas must disarm, recognise Israel under Palestinian unity deal
Hamas and Fatah organisations began negotiations on reconciliation last Tuesday through Egypt. Mr Abbas will visit Gaza in "less than a month", a Fatah official told Agence France-Presse.

When it comes to efforts to reduce pollution within city limits, Paris is already known for introducing a ban on cars older than 20 years in the city during weekdays, a measure which drew some criticism for effectively discriminating against those who can not afford newer cars.

"This government goal affects the whole French territory, rural zones included", a Paris City Hall statement said.

Paris will serve as the host city of the 2024 Olympic Games.

Officials hope that France as an entire country will ditch cars dependent on fossil fuels by 2040. The authorities are looking to drop overall emissions by 49 percent in 2030, use four billion euros to promote the transition and also invest 100 million euro more into bicycle infrastructure.
