For the first time in 15 years, an American male has won the Chicago Marathon.

The 31-year-old clinched a victory over the 26.2 miles to win in 2 hours, 9 minutes and 20 seconds.

"It's incredible. I trained so hard, day in day out, so to win a big race like this in a special place which is where my dad grew up, words can't describe how good it feels", an overjoyed Rupp said afterwards.

Dibaba vowed to challenge the women's course record of 2:17:18 set by British world record holder Paula Radcliffe in 2002 and was on that pace in the early going.

Without the use of pacemakers - athletes who are paid to lead portions of the race in hopes of encouraging fast times - the opening splits of the men's race were slow, 2:11 pace to be exact through the first few kilometres. His win on Sunday is the first by an American man at the World Marathon Majors since Meb Keflezighi won the 2014 Boston Marathon. Brigid Kosgei of Kenya came second in 2:20:22. Dibaba was out in front on her own, having gapped Kosgei, while Kirui, Rupp and Ethiopian Sisay Lemma were in contention duking out who would finish where on the men's podium. Khalid Khannouchi was the last USA victor in 2002. Kenya's Bernard Kipyego was third.

Rupp, a bronze medallist over this distance at Rio 2016, marked the 40th anniversary of the event with a long-awaited home success in the men's race. She stayed with the lead pack throughout and finished in third place with a time of 2:20:57.

The Chicago Marathon was only his fourth marathon ever.
