  • Philly in, Pittsburgh out as 2026 World Cup bids are cut to 32

The U.S. Soccer Federation announced Wednesday that Jacksonville was cut from the list of candidate venues, part of the combined bid of the United States, Canada and Mexico to host the worldwide soccer tournament in 2026.

"The four Canadian cities, along with the 28 cities in Mexico and the United States, selected for the United 2026 Bid demonstrate the strength of a North American bid, with world-class facilities across three nations", said Peter Montopoli, Canada bid director and Canada Soccer general secretary. "We are proud that FC Cincinnati and our collaboration with our fans, our community and business partners have unleashed this soccer movement and put Cincinnati on the national and global soccer stage". "Our biggest challenge will be finding ways to honor the enthusiasm of all the people across Canada, Mexico and the United States through the development of our united hosting concept". Nine other cities, two in Canada, that the Committee ruled out are still in contention to play host to other World Cup events, such as serving as a team base camp.

Canada are yet to stage the World Cup and have only made one appearance to date, making a group exit after three straight defeats at Mexico 1986.

The 2026 World Cup will be the first to feature an expanded field of 48 teams. This representative finalize hosting documents and show how their city will integrate the United Bid Committee's strategy and vision. If the bid is successful - and it is expected to be, with Morocco the only opposition - at least 12 cities would likely host games.

Senate Intel Heads Say Trump-Russia Collusion Still an Open Question
Richard Burr (R-N.C.), the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, held a press conference to a packed room of journalists on Capitol Hill.

USA soccer president Sunil Gulati is confident that North America's infrastructure will support their World Cup joint bid.

Soccer fever came in waves in L.A. during the 1990s, when the Rose Bowl hosted the men's World Cup final in 1994, and the women's World Cup final in 1999.

Federation Internationale de Football Association will announce the victor in June. "We'd also like to thank the Carolina Panthers and City of Charlotte for their collaboration, commitment and support and look forward to next steps in the bid process", Murray said. Rice-Eccles Stadium is one of the smallest of the stadiums on that list.
