  • Brazilian Olympic Committee President Carlos Nuzman arrested

Brazil's Olympic Committee chief Carlos Nuzman (C) is escorted from his home by federal police in Rio de Janeiro on October 5, 2017. The pair was charged by authorities with corruption, money laundering and participating in a criminal operation.

Brazil's Federal Police arrested Thursday morning, Carlos Arthur Nuzman the president of the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB), and the general director of the Rio 2016 Organizing Committee, Leonardo Gryner.

Nuzman sits in the back of a police auto.

Brazilian newspaper O'Globo talked to investigators who revealed that $155,000 (U.S.) was found at Nuzman's residence in five different currencies and 16 one kilogram gold bars were recently deposited in Switzerland.

Investigators also searched the offices of Brazil's Olympic Committee and several companies suspected of links to the scandal.

At that time authorities confiscated Nuzman's Brazilian and Russian passports preventing him from traveling to Lima, Peru for the International Olympic Committee session to name two host cities Paris 2024 and LA 2028.

They believe Nuzman was an intermediary in a payment in 2009 to Lamine Diack, who was president of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) during the selection process.

Thursday's operation in Rio was dubbed "Unfair Play - Second Half". Rio beat bids from Chicago, Madrid and Tokyo to host the 2016 games.

"The IOC's Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer has asked the Brazilian authorities for full information in order to proceed with the IOC's investigation, and has offered the IOC's full cooperation", the group said in a statement, but added later, "[The IOC] also reiterates that the presumption of innocence prevails".

The Rio Games were generally credited with being a sporting and organisational success, but allegations of massive corruption during the preparations and in the naming of the host city have tarnished their legacy.

The IOC will not comment further on this matter until a recommendation is issued by the IOC Ethics Commission.

Diack's International Olympic Committee membership was provisionally suspended a week after his arrest in France in November 2015 and he resigned the following day.

The IOC investigation will be the first test of the newly elected members of the Ethics Commission including chair Ban Ki Moon.
