  • Mizoram: Not a single Rohingya entered state says Home Minister Lalzirliana

In an attempt to justify attempts to deport up to 40,000 Muslim Rohingya refugees, the Indian government told the country's top court last week that the Muslim Rohingya who have fled Myanmar are a "serious security threat", linking the Rohingya people to extremist groups.

More than half a million Rohingya have fled from the Myanmar military crackdown in Rakhine State to Bangladesh after it was launched in late August.

Bangladeshi home minister will shortly visit Myanmar for discussion over the border management proposal, said Mahmood Ali.

The government of the Buddhist-majority country has accused the monks of behaving like "animals" during Tuesday's attack on a centre housing Rohingya Muslims including children on the outskirts of Colombo.

The two sides agreed on forming a joint working group to oversee the repatriation process but its composition would be decided later by both the countries, he said.

Or President U Htin Kyaw and State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi can refer the Rakhine situation to the I.C.C.

In today's meeting, Bangladesh handed Myanmar with a draft agreement of repatriation and suggested implementations of the Annan Commission report. Guterres also called for a "humanitarian access" in the conflict zone and "the return of safe, voluntary, dignified and sustainable" in their regions of origin of refugees who have fled to Bangladesh.

The Myanmar government has refused to grant entry visas to the members of a United Nations fact-finding mission appointed to investigate previous allegations of killings, rape, and torture by security forces against the Rohingya after October 2016 attacks by ARSA.

The talks came at a time when Bangladesh is struggling to cope with an unprecedented influx, termed by the United Nations one of the fastest growing refugee crises in recent times.

He said border management and security cooperation issues were featured in the discussion.

Bangladesh is optimistic about repatriation of the Rohingya Muslims, influx of whom has created pressure on Bangladesh economy and other social problems. UN Secretary-General António Guterres acknowledged [statement] Suu Kyi's speech and Myanmar's intention to "implement the recommendations of the advisory committee for Rakhine state".

A memorandum of understanding was signed on May 12, 1993 between Bangladesh and Myanmar.

"Nowhere is the link between statelessness and displacement more evident than with the Rohingya community of Myanmar, for whom denial of citizenship is a key aspect of the discrimination and exclusion that have shaped their plight", he said.
