Embattled health secretary Price boasts of Trump's support

"It is clear to me that in this case, I was not sensitive enough to my concern for the taxpayer", Price said.

Price says he won't use private jets until the department's inspector general finishes a review of his use of taxpayer money for chartered flights.

Price's job could be at risk, as President Trump on Wednesday said he was "not happy" with the situation and refused to rule out his firing.

And Trump ominously said, "We'll see", when asked if he would fire Price, a medical doctor and ex-congressman who long railed against excessive spending by the federal government.

"I was looking into it and I will look into it", Trump said. "I'm not happy about it and I let him know it".

"We're gonna work through this", Price told reporters as he left a news conference at the National Press Club.

A spokesperson for the Inspector General, now reviewing the case, said, "we take this matter very seriously, and when questions arose about potentially inappropriate travel, we immediately began assessing the issue".

Price was criticized by President Trump on Wednesday, who said "we'll see" when asked if - like Cabinet officials from previous administrations - he might lose his job over his lavish travels.

"I will take no more private charter flights as Secretary of HHS". Those trips are now under investigation by the HHS inspector general.

The controversy surrounding HHS Secretary Tom Price's taxpayer-financed private travel became a little more serious for the cabinet secretary today - because congressional Republicans stopped defending him. Another trip was from Dulles International Airport in the Washington suburbs to Philadelphia International Airport, a distance of 135 miles.

Price has defended his use of private jets and a department spokeswoman said Price tries to fly commercial whenever possible. HHS' assistant secretary for public affairs Charmaine Yoest previously said the flights were booked because of Prices' "demanding schedule".

Five House Democrats urged Price to resign in a letter on Wednesday.

Trump's publicly-expressed displeasure - or ambivalence - has been a sign in the past that the tenure of a key aide will soon be over.

"We're gonna conduct a full review and we'll see what happens", Sanders responded. He's a former orthopedic surgeon who once practiced in an inner city hospital.
