Shanghai: China said on Saturday it will ban exports of some petroleum products to North Korea, as well as imports of textiles from the isolated North, in line with a United Nations Security Council resolution passed after Pyongyang's latest nuclear test.

The agency said the quake occurred around Kilju in north-eastern North Korea, about 20 kilometres south-east of the site of a nuclear test earlier this month.

The patrols came after officials and experts said a small natural disaster near North Korea's nuclear test site on Saturday was probably not man-made, easing fears Pyongyang had exploded another nuclear bomb just weeks after its last one.

In comments to reporters in New York, North Korea's foreign minister said his country's leader is considering whether to demonstrate his ability to detonate a nuclear warhead aboard a missile sent above the Pacific Ocean. "We can not conclusively confirm at this time the nature (natural or human-made) of the event". The president's office did add that "analysis is still ongoing so we will keep you posted".

The forceful rhetoric from Pyongyang came after Trump threatened to "totally destroy" North Korea in a speech Tuesday to the General Assembly.

Kim said Trump's "mentally deranged behaviour" and his threat to destroy North Korea "convinced me ... that the path I chose is correct and that is the one I have to follow to the last, " Kim said in a statement. Kim had called Trump a "mentally deranged USA dotard" a day earlier after Trump said Washington would "totally destroy" North Korea if it threatened the United States or its allies. The larger one had a 3.4 magnitude, the group's initial assessment found, which is much smaller than anything declared as a nuclear test in previous years.

She said Kim's aim in developing nuclear weapons is "to fulfill a long-term desire on the part of the North Korean regime to reunify the Korean Peninsula under the Kim family regime and proliferate these weapons and blackmail other countries".

The Turkish army on Monday begun a military drill close to the Iraqi border and on Saturday, the armed forces said the "exercise continued with the participation of additional troops".

Pyongyang conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test on September 3, claiming it had tested a hydrogen bomb that could be loaded into an intercontinental ballistic missile.

But on the fringes of the United Nations meeting this week, North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho upped the tensions further, telling reporters Pyongyang might now consider detonating a hydrogen bomb outside its territory.

Kim earlier this week called Mr Trump "deranged" and said he would "pay dearly" for his threats.

North Korea's state media issued a statement Saturday from the National Peace Committee of Korea describing Trump as "wicked" and "a rabid dog". "We have developed strong allies and strong alliances internationally".

To comply with a UN Security Council resolution calling for sanctions over North Korea's nuclear activity, China said Friday that it will limit its exports of refined petroleum products to Pyongyang as well as ban imports of the North's textiles.

A ban on textile imports from the North will go into effect immediately, the statement said.
