  • All eyes on Trump for his debut UNGA address

Tuesday morning, Trump will deliver his first address to the full U.N. General Assembly.

North Korea's mission to the United Nations did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Trump's remarks.

The president referred to North Korean leader Kim Jung Un as "rocket man", claiming that the United States would have no problem "totally destroying" his country if necessary.

Blasting North Korea for its pursuit of nuclear weapons and threats to hit the USA with missiles, Trump said Tuesday that if the USA or its allies are forced to defend themselves, "we will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea".

Iran is another major target in Trump's speech, who called Iran's nuclear deal negotiated in 2015 during the Obama administration "an embarrassment" to the United States and indicated that he may not ratify the deal at its forthcoming mid-October deadline.

In a wide ranging speech that touched on issues of national sovereignty and the US's role in the world, the United States president singled out "a small group of rogue regimes" which he described as the "scourge of our planet".

French president calls United States climate move a mistake
Macron said he will continue to talk with Trump "in the hope that he comes back" to the climate accord. Trump has repeatedly suggested he could pull the USA from the deal.

Mr Trump has previously hinted that the USA might cut its United Nations funding.

In his first state-of-the-world report since taking the reins of the United Nations on January 1, Guterres put "nuclear peril" as the leading threat warning that "we must not sleepwalk our way into war".

"I don't think you've heard the last of it, believe me". North Korea's nuclear threat is likely to loom large on the agenda.

Trump did however not miss the opportunity to sing his own country's praises‚ opening his speech by telling delegates that the United States had done "very well since the election last November"‚ with the stock market reaching an all-time high‚ unemployment at record lows and the USA military the strongest it has ever been. As long as I hold this office, I will defend America's interests above all else.

In a wide-ranging speech where he hit out at Iran and Venezuela, President Trump reserved his sternest words for the leadership in Pyongyang.

In it, Trump wears a red "Make America Great Again" hat and tees off on a golf green. Trump will encourage burden sharing in global issues, the official said.
