KC School Makes Tough Choice to Host DeVos

  • U.S. Secretary of Education visited Nelson Mandela Elementary in Omaha on Sept. 14

Her visit focused on workforce development and vocational education.

Before the game, she grabbed a bite to eat and talked with parents inside the school.

"Washington has burdened schools with increasingly elaborate and confusing guidelines that even lawyers find hard to understand and navigate", DeVos said. The tour took DeVos to Indiana, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming and Colorado.

Dozens of protestors were outside the school - demonstrating against their stance on a number of issues, including transgender bathrooms. Her office says the tour, which began Tuesday, highlights "the unique ways in which educators across the country are meeting the needs of individual students".

As Education Week reports, the national poll, conducted by Hart Research Associates, finds, "Most parents like their public school and want to support teachers, whom they trust more than anyone else to make choices for education".

Lawmakers wrap the 2017 legislative session, 'sanctuary state' bill goes to Gov
California lawmakers have approved a bill to make the most populous US state a sanctuary state for immigrants who do not have legal residency.

Anything less reeks of self-preservation for administrators, not survival of the fittest schools for our kids. "And we have lots of students today that don't have that kind of opportunity and the power with their parents to make those decisions".

Many people in the group had the message of "Save our schools". We are talking this week about rethinking schools because the way that we've done school for over 100 years is essentially the same.

Security was visible at the school and there were two protesters across the street prior to DeVos' arrival. Superintendent Cheryl Pruitt and school board president Rosie Washington were also present for her visit.

Former Education Secretary Arne Duncan said in a statement that the Trump administration is "once again choosing politics over students, and students will pay the price".

Given the results of the survey, there's little surprise members of Congress are not exactly rallying around the DeVos agenda for public education. "It's time Secretary DeVos reconsiders her support". Even Republicans on Capitol Hill are generally rejecting most of her budget cuts and her plans to send more public funding to private schools.
