US Marine Corps Major Adrian Rankine-Galloway told the news station the citizen was 'legally detained by Department of Defense personnel as a known enemy combatant, ' while it's unclear how long the individual was involved in the ploy.

But in early Thursday, Sept. 14, a spokesperson for the US-led coalition that works to fight the ISIS opted not to comment on the news about the American ISIS fighter.

The officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the American had surrendered to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a US -backed alliance of mostly Arab and Kurdish fighters.

"Regardless of the nationality, ISIS will be defeated, and our goal is to defeat them, regardless of where you come from", Col. Ryan Dillon said at a briefing. "We encourage people not to do that".

ISIS has used a number of purported Americans in its propaganda videos, but Hughes said those who don't speak Arabic or have crucial skills can be sent to front lines "as cannon fodder".

"You can't be very bright if you're going over there and doing that".

Although Dillon said he was unaware of other incidents of Americans being captured, Mohamad Jamal Khweis, 27, of Virginia, was indicted last November on charges of aiding terrorism after he was captured in Iraq. He was brought to the US for a trial and convicted in June of providing material support to ISIS.

On the campaign trail, Trump indicated he was open to detaining USA citizens at Guantánamo Bay and trying them at the military commissions there.

The alliance has taken part in the USA -backed air and ground offensive aimed at forcing Islamic State militants out of Raqqah, the group's self-declared capital in Syria.

It is not the first time an American citizen fighting for IS has been detained.
