The attacker lunged at the soldier at the central Chatelet metro station around 6.30 am (0430 GMT), making reference to Allah, a police source said.

The soldier is reported to have tackled his attacker to the ground before he was arrested by armed police, the Independent reports.

The suspect, said to be shouting Islamic State slogans, attacked a French soldier carrying out anti-terrorism duties in the French captial this morning.

The unidentified man is said to have rushed at a patrol of soldiers wearing combat uniforms and brandishing assault rifles.

The man was taken to the main Chatelet police station, and now faces multiple terror charges.

French Defence Minister Florence Parly, referring to Friday's incident, said the fact that the attacker was swiftly brought under control was "proof of the professionalism and efficiency of the Sentinelle soldiers in their mission to protect".

Hosts win third T20I by 34 runs to lift Independence Cup
The global team opened their innings with hard knocks from Tamim Iqbal, bringing them to 15 runs at the end of the second over. On Friday, the World XI , chasing a target of 184, never got going as they could manage to score only 150/8 in their 20 overs.

This incident represents the seventh attack against soldiers patrolling as part of Operation Sentinel.

On August 9 six soldiers on patrol in the ongoing anti-terror operation dubbed Operation Sentinelle in the Paris suburb of Levallois were injured, two seriously, when a vehicle deliberately rammed into them.

France declared a state of emergency following attacks in Paris in November 2015, in which more than 130 people were killed.

Frances's armed forces minister say the soldier was not injured.

He took the attacker under control following the attack.

In April, a police officer was killed in a shooting on the Champs-Elysées.
