UB also was ranked among the Best Colleges for Veterans, at No. 58, and among the Best Value Schools, at No. 108. This year Berkeley, UCLA, University of Southern California and Emory University are tied.

U.S. News & World Report ranked almost 1,400 institutions from data mostly provided by the schools themselves.

In that overall list, the usual campuses are at the top: Princeton, Harvard, the University of Chicago, Yale, Columbia, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford.

LSU, whose highest ranking was 124th in 2011, finished behind nine schools in the Southeastern Conference.

The rankings factor in measures like graduation and retention rates, and selectivity.

High school counselors from both public and private schools were surveyed and asked which universities they think offer the best undergraduate education to their students.

Compared to other public schools around the country, Penn State was ranked 14th while the University of Pittsburgh came in at No. 24.

The newest rankings include MSU as 22 in the Top Public University-Master's/South division, up two spots from a year ago.

The report also stated that Tsinghua University in Beijing is Asia's leading university due to its high employer reputation score and network of employer-student connections, WION claimed.

The University of SC ranked No. 1 in global business programs.

"It is great to see the U.S. News & World Report ranking continue to gradually improve, reflecting Cornell's continued dedication to our students", said Colleen Murphy, vice president for enrollment and dean of admission. TCNJ also ranked second for the highest percentage of freshmen coming from the top 25 percent of their high school class (76 percent), and second in actual six-year graduation rate for 2016 (87 percent).

In a statement, LSU said the latest rankings mark the 10th consecutive year that the school was listed among the best national universities.

The rankings focus on student outcomes - including graduation and retention rates - which carry the most weight at 30 percent.
