Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, New Hampshire's largest hospital, reported on its Facebook page that the building was on lockdown after reports of an active shooter just before 2 p.m. local time on Tuesday.

In an email alert to staff earlier Tuesday afternoon, Dartmouth-Hitchcock said an active shooter was likely still in the medical center, "but is contained". Tweets began filtering in at around 1:45 p.m. on September 12 that there had been gunfire in the hospital's ICU. "Code silver" indicates that a violent situation is unfolding. A code silver is a active shooter. The Lebanon Police Department is asking people to avoid the area while roads around the hospital have been closed. Although law enforcement officials have not confirmed whether the auto was connected to the incident, Rhode Island State Police confirmed to WJAR the SUV belongs to the suspect after authorities contacted them regarding the vehicle's Rhode Island license plates.
