An 11-year-old boy had wandered into a prohibited area and fell into a crater at Solfatara di Pozzuoli, one of 40 volcanoes in the Campi Flegrei area west of Naples, The Guardian reported, citing Italian press reports.

Solfatara is a shallow volcanic crater at Pozzuoli, close to Naples.

Another of the couple's sons, a seven-year-old, survived amid reports he was able to scramble to safety.

It's not known if the boy lost consciousness because of the fumes or if the quicksand pulled him in.

The boy slipped after breaching a fence surrounding the Solfatara Crater in Pozzuoli and his parents followed in an attempt to rescue their son, police said.

"I saw a child run crying, I did not think I was facing the worst tragedy of my life", said eye witness Diego Vitagliano.

The family, from Turin in northern Italy, are understood to have fallen 5ft.

Their seven year old son was also with them but stayed behind the barrier while his parents rushed to help his brother. A tragedy, they pulled out two bodies, then pulled us away.

Tourists are allowed to walk around the ground level Solfatara crater, which is dotted with trees, while admiring fenced off bubbling mud pools and fumeroles that spurt steam and sulphurous gases.

The Campi Flegrei is an area with more than 30 volcanic craters, whose possible eruptions worry scientists.

The Independent reported that the volcanic crater is in the Phlegraen Fields and that the fields are scorching hot only a few inches below the surface.
