Hurricane Irma hit the Florida, and to help out those in need Tesla Inc. made a decision to deploy a software update that allows some of its vehicles to use more of battery capacity and get the additional range in an effort to escape from the powerful storm. There are reports of traffic jams and gas stations running out gas.
The update temporarily unlocked the full potential of the 75kW Model S and Model X SUVs, giving them another 30 to 40 miles on a single charge, according to Electrek. But for Tesla, managing variations using software makes sense, given that the company sells only three vehicles now.
Tesla usually charges drivers $9,000 for that privilege, but waived the fee to give drivers temporary use of the feature.
"As vehicles become more advanced and reliant on software systems that can be tweaked instantly, from anywhere, owner control and access diminishes and is yielded back to the company", pointed out Justin Westbrook at Jalopnik. Tesla is now doing something similar with its Autopilot technology: all new vehicles have the hardware, but Tesla "unlocks" capabilities using software, if owners want to pay the additional cost.
But last week, Tesla decided to temporarily make this extra capacity available even to Floridians who hadn't paid for the upgrade to ensure they had enough range to get out of Florida ahead of Hurricane Irma.
The software update released by Tesla essentially raised the operating range of the two Models from 210 miles to 249 miles, enabling owners to move out of the area once the evacuation recommendations were announced. Tesla will continue keeping the full 75 kWh battery unlock through to September 16.
Otherwise, the other Superchargers are reportedly online and accessible on the way north. Stay safe out there everyone.
