  • Florida State, Florida cancel football games because of Irma

More than 6.7 million Florida homes and businesses are now without power after Hurricane Irma moved through the state, according to the state's emergency management division.

There's room for more, County Administrator Mike Merrill said, but he urged people to stay put for now.

"This thing is a monster", he added.

Rolling Stonereports when Irma was swirling away as a category five storm, the sheer energy output was like nothing we've ever seen in the modern world.

"This is going to be a very, very lengthy restoration, arguably the most lengthy restoration and most complex in US history", he said, asking that customers be patient.

The reason Tampa Bay is so vulnerable is that the bay acts as a funnel for storm surges, forcing water into narrow channels with nowhere else to go.

In Georgia, utilities reported nearly 390,000 customers without power.

The airbase hosting the headquarters of the US Central Command was evacuated of its staff and planes with the exception of mission personnel as hurricane Irma veered into the area. Irma hit them as a Category 4 hurricane, with sustained winds near 130 miles per hour.

A massive but weakened Hurricane Irma zeroed in on the Tampa Bay region early Monday after hammering much of Florida with roof-ripping winds, gushing floodwaters and widespread power outages.

Communities along the Georgia coast are seeing extensive flooding from Tropical Storm Irma.

It left more than 20 people dead across the Caribbean and as it moved north over the Gulf of Mexico's bathtub-warm water of almost 90 degrees, it was expected to regain strength. North Mississippi is in the cone of impact for Tuesday. Chimney Rock and Mt. Mitchell state parks are also closed until further notice, North Carolina State Parks said.

American Airlines said earlier Sunday that limited operations at its Miami hub would resume at 5 p.m. Monday, but that plan was shelved with the airport's latest announcement.

A high wind warning is in effect in parts of North Carolina from Shelby west toward Andrews. "They just made sure to have plenty of food at our house, and we have a full-house generator that comes on automatically when the power goes out".
