Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi has come under global pressure to halt the violence.

The conflict, marked by competing accusations from different ethnic groups, has intensified long-running mistrust between Myanmar's Buddhists and its maligned Muslim minority.

Earlier Monday, the United Nations human rights chief, Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein, said that the violence and injustice faced by the Rohingya "seems a textbook example of ethnic cleansing".

"The meeting called upon the government of Myanmar to accept the UN Human Rights Council's fact-finding mission to conduct a thorough and independent investigation into all alleged violations of global human rights law and to bring the perpetrators to justice", said the statement.

The foreign minister during those briefings referred to the recently published report of the Kofi Annan Commission and urged the worldwide community to pursue the Myanmar government for "immediate and unconditional" implementation of the recommendations.

He said in a statement late on Saturday that agencies urgently needed $77 million to cope with an emergency that was triggered when Rohingya insurgents attacked police posts and an army base on August 25, prompting a military counter-offensive. As well as Rohingya, some 27,000 ethnic Rakhine Buddhists and Hindus have also fled violence in the north of Rakhine state.

"Aung San Suu Kyi does not belong in the same company as Nelson Mandela, the Dalai Lama, and Malala Yousafzai".

The Dalai Lama said he felt "very sad" about the suffering of Rohingya Muslims, and that those harassing them "should remember Buddha".

Accounts from refugees show the Burmese military is also targeting civilians with shootings and wholesale burning of Rohingya villages in an apparent attempt to purge Rakhine state of Muslims.

In a report, the Inter-Sectoral Coordination Group said most of the new refugees, around 246,000, have been put up in temporary shelters and existing camps since an outbreak of violence on August 25, reports Efe news.

"This complete denial of reality is doing great damage to the worldwide standing of a government which, until recently, benefited from enormous good will", he said, calling on authorities to allow his office access to investigate the situation in the country.

Safura Khatun, 60, was among the hundreds who crossed into Bangladesh on Monday.

"My investigation suggests the possibility that crimes against humanity may have been committed, which can only be confirmed by a subsequent criminal investigation", Zeid said, urging the council to set up an global investigation into rights violations in Venezuela.

"I don't know what I will do here".

Tens of thousands more are believed to be on the move inside Rakhine after more than a fortnight without shelter, food and water.

- According to reports, the local administration plans to start biometric registration of the new arrivals from Monday.

Many tell similar stories - of Myanmar soldiers firing indiscriminately on their villages, burning their homes and warning them to leave or to die. "People who speak out for fundamental human rights are also threatened", he said.
