Ten militants from Egypt's Islamic State group affiliate were killed on Sunday in a police raid and a near three-hour shootout in a residential neighbourhood of Cairo, security officials said.
Seven others were wounded in the attack, said security and military officials.
Police found huge amount of weapons and ammunition from the two terror hideouts.
One of the security sources said authorities suspect the individuals to be members of Hasm, a group which has claimed several attacks around the Egyptian capital targeting judges and policemen since previous year. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to brief media.
The attack took place about 30 kilometers (20 miles) west of el-Arish in northern Sinai, the epicenter of a long-running insurgency by militants now led by the Daesh terrorist group.
"With the approach of the security raid towards two apartments located at Ard El Lewaa district for the sake of arresting the IS members, the raid's force was met by shooting and one of the IS militants threw a bomb towards the forces, however it harmed him", the statement read.
According to the state news agency MENA, security forces entered a gun battle with militants in the vicinity of the blast site and managed to slay several of them.
It did not provide any casualty figures, but the attack appears to have been the deadliest on security forces in Sinai since July, when at least 23 soldiers were killed in a suicide auto bombing that targeted a checkpoint near the Gaza border.
