  • McMaster issues mandatory evacuation for barrier islands in 3 counties

The mandatory evacuation will take effect at 10:00 a.m. on September 9 for Barrier Islands in Beaufort, Colleton and Jasper counties.

"There will be no other evacuations for other counties", McMaster said.

Officials say they expect the storm surge could be as high as 4 to 6 feet due to the high tides in these areas.

"We're not declaring this disaster over".

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster announced on Saturday that he had signed a memorandum of understanding with Florida Governor Rick Scott to provide assistance from the state's first responders.

McMaster said all S.C. residents should continue preparing for impacts from the storm, and warned that the storm's path could change by tomorrow.

Any order would correspond to lane reversals on several major highways, including Interstate 26 between Charleston and Columbia, meaning they would allow only out-bound traffic. The shelters are now only for South Carolinians, but they are preparing to receive residents from Florida and Georgia should they be needed. Specifically, McMaster issued an executive order directing state agencies to "cease providing state or local funds, whether via grant, contract, state-administered federal funds, or any other form" to abortion providers.

McMaster said the rest of the state can evacuate if they don't feel safe.

"You never know where a hurricane is going to go", he said. Bluffton High School and Battery Creek High School in Beaufort County. He said this could result in flash flooding, especially in the mountainous terrain and the Upstate. The order still applied to three counties. Winds could be as strong as 60 miles per hour farther south and west of Columbia.

State forecasters remained uncertain of the storm's path and cautioned that SC residents should remain vigilant. No official announcement has been made yet about canceling school early next week.

In its current track, the eye of Irma is set to make landfall over the southern portion of Florida on Sunday night and make its way north, nearing south Georgia by Monday.
