  • While you were sleeping: Hurricane, earthquake wreak havoc

The epicentre of the quake was off the coast of Chiapas, a state in southern Mexico, but the rumblings rocked the Mexican capital more than 600 miles away, causing electricity failures, and reports of sporadic damage.

The head of Mexico's civil defence agency confirmed the deaths of 45 people in the southern state of Oaxaca.

Just one day later, Hurricane Katia hit land north of Tecolutla in Veracruz state, pelting the region with intense rains and maximum sustained winds of 75 miles per hour (120) kph.

Teams found bodies in the rubble, but the highlight was pulling four people, including two children, alive from the completely collapsed Hotel Del Rio, where one woman died.

In downtown Juchitan, the remains of brick walls and clay tile roofs cluttered streets as families dragged mattresses onto sidewalks to spend a second anxious night sleeping outdoors.

"The priority in Juchitan is to restore water and food supplies and provide medical attention to those affected", Pena Nieto tweeted after visiting the devastated town.

Mexico's seismology service measured Thursday's quake at magnitude 8.2.

"We are all collapsed, our homes and our people", said Rosa Elba Ortiz Santiago, 43, who sat with her teenage son and more than a dozen neighbors on an assortment of chairs.

It was a long, grueling recovery, but after a slow start to the hardcourt season, Stephens went on a tear. A joyous Stephens began to walk around the court, waving to the crowd and to her player's box.

The quake was felt as far north as Mexico City - some 800 kilometers from the epicenter - where people fled their homes, many in their pajamas, after hearing sirens go off.

In Xalapa, the capital of the eastern state of Veracruz, "two people died in mudslides" triggered by the rainstorm, Puente said.

It was later downgraded to a tropical storm, before petering out on Saturday.

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, has declared three days of national mourning after the strongest natural disaster measuring 8.2 on the Richter scale struck off the country in a century that left at least 61 people dead.

In a televised address Friday, Pena Nieto declared three days of mourning. A hospital also collapsed, Pena Nieto said after touring the city and meeting with residents.

"But we are certain that the power of unity, the power of solidarity and the power of shared responsibility will be greater".

The worst-hit city is Juchitan, in the southern state of Oaxaca, where at least 36 bodies were pulled from ruins, and a large number of buildings collapsed, including the city's town hall.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said tsunami waves had been detected but on Friday night USA time they confirmed that the "threat had now passed".
