  • Marvel and Star Wars films will be Disney streaming exclusives

Iger also narrowed the time frame when the Disney streaming service will launch, saying he expects it will go live in late 2019.

Disney CEO Bob Iger cleared up speculation today, telling the crowd at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Media's Communications and Entertainment Conference that the Star Wars and Marvel films would be a part of its streaming service, which is due to launch in 2019, reports Variety.

Disney had previously left the door open for those movies staying on Netflix, when it announced plans in August to cut its licensing ties with Netflix in favor of building its own internet streaming service.

In the grand scheme of things, the Disney movie output deal has represented only a fraction of Netflix's overall content spending. It is now scheduled to launch sometime in late 2019.

Last year, Disney said it was taking a 33 percent stake in BAMTech for $1 billion. "With ESPN, Disney and ABC, we're well positioned".

Katia now third hurricane in tropics; forms in SW Gulf of Mexico
It said a hurricane watch was in effect for the coast of the Mexican state of Veracruz where heavy rainfall could be expected. Strengthening is forecast and Katia could become a hurricane before it approaches the coast of Veracruz in a couple of days.

But at least we know we can watch Disney, Pixar, Marvel Studios, and Lucasfilm films on the streaming app.

Disney will produce 4 - 5 lower budget films along with TV shows exclusively for the new Disney app.

The decision also means that Netflix - which now has an exclusive deal with Disney to stream its new films - may not have any major titles from Disney after 2019, when their partnership ends.

Disney's big move away from Netflix just took another major step. In 2019, they are going to launch their own streaming service and will be competing directly with Netflix, Hulu and everyone else out there. There's no word yet on the ultimate fate of the many Netflix-exclusive Marvel TV shows (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher, The Defenders).

Disney is one of the most recognized names on Netflix, but it is not the company first to pull away. And it remains to be seen how successful this launch is when compared to the likes of Netflix.
