  • Narendra Modi to discuss Rohingya issue on Myanmar trip

An online petition calling for the revocation of Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi's 1991 Nobel Peace Prize has accrued 366,000 signatures, PressTV reported.

Modi's first bilateral visit here comes at a time when the Myanmarese government led by Nobel laureate Suu Kyi is facing worldwide pressure over the 125,000 Rohingya Muslims that have poured into Bangladesh in just two weeks after Myanmar's military launched a crackdown in the Rakhine state.

The Prime Minister also said that future Indian projects would be in line with Myanmar's needs and priorities.

Hundreds have died since Rohingya militants raided police posts in Myanmar's Rakhine State last month.

Taking a strong stance on terror, Suu Kyi said, "Together we will ensure that terror is not allowed to take root on our soil or on the soil of neighbouring countries". Around 40,000 Rohingyas are said to be staying illegally in India. A total of 11 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) have been signed between the two governments that entail an array of subjects such as maritime security cooperation, press relations between the two countries and cooperation between the Election Commission and Union Election of Myanmar.

Rasheed said: "It is shameful and unfortunate that Aung San Suu Kyi who was seen as an icon for her constant fight to uphold democratic traditions and human rights has changed her colors so quickly and is justifying the ethnic cleansing of Muslims in Myanmar".

He also spoke about bringing about development in the agricultural sector.

The Myanmar's president Htin Kyaw and Suu Kyi had visited India a year ago.

Equating Rohingya Muslims issue in the Rakhine state with India's Kashmir issue, Myanmar's State Councillor Aung San Suu Kyi on Thursday said there is a similarity between Rohingya and Kashmir issue.

Ahead of his visit, Modi had said India and Myanmar were looking at strengthening existing cooperation in areas of security and counter-terrorism, trade and investment, infrastructure and energy, and culture.

Modi, in his statement, stressed on scaling up security cooperation, saying that being neighbours, the two countries have similar security concerns.

The project is created to link Sittwe port in Myanmar, which India helped develop, with the the northeastern Indian state of Mizoram.

Earlier, during the delegation-level talks, Modi said, "We would like to contribute to Myanmar's development efforts as part of our "Sabka saath sabka vikaas" initiative".

Geographically, Myanmar is the first stop for India's Act East policy.

Earlier today, PM Modi received a ceremonial welcome from Myanmar President Htin Kyaw before the two inspected the guard of honour in Naypyidaw. Prime Minister Modi performed "puja" at Kalibari Temple. He had visited the country in 2014 to attend the ASEAN-India Summit.
