Senior Kannada journalist and social activist Gauri Lankesh was shot dead on Tuesday night by unidentified men at her residence here, police said.

No deadline has been fixed for the SIT, but they have been asked to take up the work immediately, said Siddaramaiah, who heads a Congress government. He also said his government had an "open mind" to an investigation by CBI, which the slain journalist's family has demanded.

The assailants fled on a motorcycle after spraying bullets at Gauri Lankesh on Tuesday night as she was leaving her auto outside her home in the Karnataka state capital.

Gauri, a writer, publisher and editor, had returned home in her vehicle and was opening the gate when motorcycle-borne assailants sprayed bullets, with two hitting her on the chest and one on her forehead.

The 25-man squad lists had to be completed on Friday, with the Premier League confirming the selections on their official website. Costa has made it clear he wants to rejoin Atletico after being told he is not in Antonio Conte's Chelsea plans for the season.

He stressed that the CBI should conduct the probe, but also said he was convinced that the ongoing investigation had made progress, as Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramiah had told him. Protests and candlelit vigils were held in her memory across the country.

GUJ secretary Gerard D'souza said in a press release, "The GUJ believes that the murder, and the manner in which it has been carried out, is a deliberate attempt to silence journalists and others who have been speaking up, questioning dominant narratives, and [shining] an uncomfortable light on the activities of fundamentalists, extremists and others who question the freedoms we all espouse".

Gauri was known for her critical views of Hindutva politics, and many have now drawn a parallel with the murders of rationalists, including M M Kalburgi, in the recent past. "It is a sad reminder of danger the journalists facing from anti progressive forces", he said.

Prasad, in his final tweet, demanded speedy action by Karnataka police over the murder, "I expect that Karnataka police will soon nab the killers of #GauriLakesh at the earliest at take action against them".
