Roughly 4 million records containing the personal details of Time Warner Cable (TWC) customers were discovered stored on an Amazon server without a password late last month.

According to Gizmodo, the breached files were discovered last week by Kromtech Security Center while its researchers were investigating an unrelated breach at World Wrestling Entertainment.

The repositories were linked to BroadSoft, a US-based company with offices worldwide that provides services to large communications companies including AT&T, Sprint and Vodafone.

The leaked records records do not represent individual customers, meaning that fewer than 4 millions customers' personal information was revealed.

The records, which stemmed from the MyTWC mobile app, date as far back as November 2010 - years before Charter bought TWC. "In this case engineers accidentally leaked not only customer and partner data but also internal credentials that criminals could have easily used to monitor or access company's network and infrastructure".

In a separate accident, files on thousands of Americans with high level security clearances were found on an unsecured Amazon server.

The BroadSoft data was not properly configured to allow public access in AWS, Kromtech said.

Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta hit 32 winners to beat Frenchman Nicholas Mahut 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 and seal a fourth-round spot. Muguruza, one of the pre-tournament favourites, dropped serve once, the only glitch in a neat display.

The files, more than 600 gigabytes in size, were discovered on August 24 without a password by researchers of Kromtech Security Center, the technology news website reported.

"There is no indication that any Charter systems were impacted", Charter said.

Charter Communications, the parent company of Time Warner Cable, said users' financial information had not been exposed and the data largely concerned former or "legacy" customers. The company encouraged users of its MyTWC app to change their log-in information.

Broadsoft could not be immediately reached for comment. Kromtech said the exposed S3 buckets contained a "massive amount of sensitive information and researchers estimate it would take weeks to fully sort through all of the data".

Charter Communications, which owns Time Warner Cable, has said that the disclosed information may include transaction information, email addresses, and usernames among other information.

Verizon isn't the only big U.S. telecom whose corporate ally left customer data out in the open. "We apologize for the frustration and anxiety this causes, and will communicate directly to customers if their information was involved in this incident".
