  • Redskins change Su'a Cravens' mind about retiring for now

This June 15, 2016 photo shows Washington Redskins' safety Su'a Cravens walking from the field during the NFL football teams minicamp at the Redskins Park in Ashburn, Va. Cravens had to be talked out of retiring on Sunday, Sept. 3, 2017 during a meeting with team president Bruce Allen, and his future with the team is in doubt.

Defensive coordinator Joe Barry started Cravens as an inside linebacker his rookie year, believing that his athleticism would serve the team well in pass coverage against running backs and tight ends.

A second-round pick from USC in the 2016 NFL Draft, Cravens dealt with torn biceps and a concussion last season. Washington officials want to help him through it rather than have him walk away from the game, which would make him one of the youngest National Football League players to date to retire.

Cravens reportedly went through a similar situation as a rookie, no-showing for 1.5 days before the Redskins had to lure him back. Sep. "I think I need to follow what makes me happy, get my mental right, my well-being right and my family right".

After claiming former Vikings lineman T.J. Clemmings off waivers, the Redskins placed Cravens on the exempt/left squad list. "We're here to support him", Swearinger said. "So everyday I'm constantly in my book, in the notes, you know, talking to guys, just trying to [have] conversations with coaches [and] coordinators".

"If it's family issues, personal issues, whatever he's dealing with, I'm supportive".

Linebacker Mason Foster said he was surprised by the news.

The move occurred the day after officials trimmed the roster to 53 players, so the move - and its timing - cost another player a chance to make the team.

Football has always been a risky sport, but recent research has provided insight into how life-threatening the game can be. But the team said Gruden will speak to reporters on Tuesday. "But over the long run you will get exposed if you don't love the game because through the ups and downs, times get tough".
